Co-Branding Benefits

In addition to all the basic advantages of hosting the Tucows libraries (see Why be a Content partner?) , co-branded content offers you the opportunity to:

• Expand your offerings while maintaining the look and feel of your site.
• Offer your customers the Tucows libraries in their own language.
• Earn greater revenue from advertising sales.
• Create (as desired) a more flattering association with the Tucows brand.

Hardware requirements for a Tucows Co-Branded site

Tucows does not provide the hardware on which the Co-Branded site will run. The Co-Branding partner will have access to distribution servers located in Toronto, Canada, and will implement scripts supplied by Tucows to automate the mirroring of the content from the Tucows servers in Toronto to the Co-Branded site's hosting servers.

Any Unix (or Linux) system can host a Tucows Co-Branded site. The site runs in conjunction with the Apache Web server and requires the Perl (version 5.003 minimum, 5.6 recommended) programming language to be implemented on the host machine (Web programming solutions requiring different servers or platforms, e.g. PHP, ASP, JSP, etc., are not supported). The disk space requirements will vary depending on the number and type of libraries mirrored by the Co-Branding partner. A full set of English libraries currently requires approximately 90 gigabytes of storage space. The disk space allotted for the Co-Brand site should always exceed the total disk space consumed by the libraries mirrored, including any non-English libraries that will be offered on the site. The Co-Branding partner is advised to contact his/her Tucows account representative for further details about the specific disk space requirements for their site.

Limitations

1. As stated earlier, Co-Branded sites are essentially static sites. Any dynamic content must be supplied via SSI. There is no support for server side HTML parsing other than through the SSIs during the delivery of the pages to end users (i.e., PHP, ASP, JSP, etc. are not supported).
2. Generally speaking, Tucows will provide the Co-Branding partner with all content in any English library being Co-Branded. Translated libraries may not always contain exactly the same the content contained in the corresponding English library.
3. The Tucows navigation structure should be maintained in the same manner as the regular (i.e. non-Co-Branded) Tucows mirror site. This entails using the same sites/groups and sections as the regular (non-Co-Branded) Tucows sites.
4. Tucows presently does not support localized software titles. By "localized," we mean titles that would only be of interest to speakers of a given language; for example, a German language Co-Branded site might want German-language-only software that is not carried in the regular English libraries. At present, we do not offer such libraries. However, this feature may be added in the future.
5. Tucows does not support streaming technologies for our software libraries.
6. Any server side scripts added to the Co-Branded site by the Co-Branding partner must be maintained by the Co-Branding partner. Tucows does not supply any server-side scripts other than those necessary to mirror the content.

Advertising

Generally speaking, Co-Branding partners are responsible for handling their own banner ad delivery. The banner ad code can be included in one of the server-side include components that are supplied by the partner. Because banner ad delivery and hosting are under the control of the Co-Branding partner it is the responsibility of the partner to provide Tucows with monthly reports of all banner ad traffic and page view statistics.

Business requirements

Tucows's main business requirement is that the Tucows logo must appear in a box on every page.
